Shutter Island (A Ilha do Medo)

Watching Inception this Friday remmembered me of one of the last films I watched in the movies, with some of the friends I went to see Inception. Another film which was really surprising and that I liked very much. This one is also with Leonardo DiCaprio, it's Shutter Island ("A Ilha do Medo" in Portuguese). Very interesting plot, really well constructed with an unespected ending. We left the cinema appalled. It is not as original as Inception, you will not be amazed during the whole film. However, and here I won't say much, 'cause I don't want to spoil the fun, but at some point the story will make a turn that is going to surprise everyone. I also highly recommend watching this movie.
Plot: Addapted from the book by Dennis Lehane originally named "Patient 67" and then changed to "Shutter Island", a drama set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. Inception (A Origem)

Yesterday I went with a couple of friends to the movies to wath Inception ("A Origem" in Portuguese)... What a great movie! I was impressed. Coimpletly original idea, very catching, extremely well developed, very good ending. Even though this movie takes 2 hours and 28 minutes, you will be on the edge of your seats the whole time without even noticing time passing by. Definatelly a must see!
Plot: In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a single idea within one's mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset. A highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job till date, Inception. (eddited from IMDb and i♥movies).

Desperate Housewives & Pretty Little Liars

Yesterday the boxes of the first two seasons of Desperate Houseviwes arrived at home... I know it is a very well-know series, but believe it or not I had never watched it or had the interest to watch it. Maybe because of its name, I had never even read of what it was about...
A couple of months ago, I watched the promo for this new series called Pretty Little Liars, I got interested and watched the first episode, which I really liked... It wasn't until maybe the 3rd episode, that reading more about the series I got to know it was based in a book series by Sara Shepard and that it was being said to be a teen version of Desperate Housewives... Ok, maybe Desperate Housewives wasn't about what I was thinking of after all... I got the 1st episode and... Well, isn't it interesting? It really is an original idea! Pretty Little Liars goes on the same lines, eventhough the storyline is different (after all it is not a copy of DH...).
If you, like myself, never watched neither of them, give it a try... It is very different and catching! If you love DH, try PPL, I think you'll like it! Here are the plots and trailers for you to enjoy!!

The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas

Yesterday I watched the movie The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, I still hadn't seen the movie eventhough I had already read the book by John Boyne.
It is a very good movie, I was impressed. I thought the adaptation was really well done, it is so true to the book, it is amazing. It's really difficult to see good adaptations these days, of course that in the book the point of view is only Bruno's, which is very difficult to put in a movie, how can you build a story that everyone is seeing through the looks of a child? It is obvious that it wouldn't be possible to be that equal to the book regarding this part, but inspite of that, the story was perfectly constructed, so congratulations to everyone responsible!!
Plot: Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

Glee

As my iTunes Pick of the Day today was a song from the soundtrack of Glee, I thought it would be interesting to include a post in this section about Glee.

Glee could be resumed as a teen musical show, but that wouldn't do it any justice. It is the story of kids in high school that are trying to gain popularity, again by saying only this it sounds just like a huge cliché, but add up some funny scenes, some music and some dance performances accompained by great musical selection and very talented actors/singers and then you have Glee. Besides, the story can still surprise you even with its cliché parts.
To conclude, it is definatelly a show to try watching, even if you don't get really excited about the plot at first.

DVDs and more DVDs

Today this HUGE pack of DVDs arrived... I love it when it happens! =D

They are:

Ghost (1990)

Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze are the passionate lovers whose romance is undone when the latter is murdered during a bungled hit arranged by a rival. The clever concept by screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (director of My Life) extends outward into comedy (Swayze's character communicates through a sassy medium played by Whoopi Goldberg, who won an Oscar for this role), horror (the afterlife is populated by hell-bound demons and the like), and romantic complications (a handsome suitor, played by Tony Goldwyn, comes on to Moore while Swayze's spirit is still hanging around). Directed by Jerry Zucker, previously best known for codirecting Airplane! and similar broad comedies, Ghost is a careful balancing act of strong commercial elements, but at heart it is a timeless Hollywood tearjerker that easily gets under one's skin. Grease (1978)

Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny fell in love over the summer. But when they unexpectedly discover they're now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance? (IMDb)

It's 1947 Hollywood, and Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins), a down-on-his-luck detective, is hired to find proof that Marvin Acme, gag factory mogul and owner of Toontown, is playing hanky-panky with femme fatale Jessica Rabbit, wife of Maroon Cartoon superstar Roger Rabbit. When Acme is found murdered, all fingers point to Roger, and the sinister, power-hungry Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd) is on a mission to bring Roger to justice. Roger begs the Toon-hating Valiant to find the real evildoer and the plot thickens as Eddie uncovers scandal after scandal and realizes the very existence of Toontown is at stake! WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT is deliciously outrageous fun the whole family will enjoy. (Amazon)

Juno (2007)

Somewhere between the sharp satire of Election and the rich human comedy of You Can Count On Me lies Juno, a sardonic but ultimately compassionate story of a pregnant teenage girl who wants to give her baby up for adoption. Social misfit Juno (Ellen Page, Hard CandyX-Men: The Last Stand) protects herself with a caustic wit, but when she gets pregnant by her friend Paulie (Michael Cera, Superbad), Juno finds herself unwilling to terminate the pregnancy. When she chooses a couple who place a classified ad looking to adopt, Juno gets drawn further into their lives than she anticipated. But Juno is much more than its plot; the stylized dialogue (by screenwriter Diablo Cody) seems forced at first, but soon creates a richly textured world, greatly aided by superb performances by Page, Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman as the prospective parents, and J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man) and Allison Janney as Juno's father and stepmother. Director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) deftly keeps the movie from slipping into easy, shallow sarcasm or foundering in sentimentality. The result is smarter and funnier than you might expect from the subject matter, and warmer and more touching than you might expect from the cocky attitude. Page's performance is deceptively simple; she never asks the audience to love her, yet she effortlessly carries a movie in which she's in almost every scene. That's star power. (Amazon)

Sleepy Hollow (1999) "A Lenda do Cavaleiro Sem Cabeça", in Portuguese

The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.
The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. (Amazon)

New page, new websites to talk about!
Well, the hugest database ever, to find no matter what film, TV series, actor, etc. You probably already know this, but is the International Movie Database (IMDb)... It is very complete, and I rely on it for everything I need to know about a movie or TV series...
But, after searching for quite a while for another kind of site for movies, something more like last.fm (for books) or Goodreads (for books)... Where we can add the movies/TV series we own, have a profile, friends, etc. and founding one that I really liked, I came across i♥movies... It is the most complete site of these genre that I found... You can add games to your collection, wishlist, you can add friends, make lists, etc. I really liked this one, and it also has TV series (which for me is really important, because I really love them!), many sites I looked were nice but had only movies...
